Investigation No. 001 — The Post-Work Transition

What happens
after employment?

AI is ending the ten-thousand-year bargain between humans and work. The question is not whether. The question is what we build in its place.

bootr.ai is a community of inquiry. We work with businesses, community groups and individuals to map the transition from employment-based society toward something genuinely new — contribution economies, shared infrastructure, community sovereignty, liberated time. We don't have all the answers. We have the right questions and the tools to pursue them seriously.

01

Time is the only truly scarce resource

AI can generate abundance. It cannot create time. The gift of automation is time — to think, to create, to care for one another, to become more fully human.

02

Contribution is not the same as employment

The impulse to make, help, teach, and build is human — not economic. A post-work society doesn't abolish purpose. It liberates purpose from the wage relationship.

03

Community is the right unit of scale

The nation-state is too large to know its members. The corporation is structured to extract from them. The community is where trust, reciprocity, and equitable exchange can actually function.

04

AI should be a tool of liberation

The danger is not automation — it is ownership. If AI productivity flows to shareholders alone, we build the most efficient inequality engine in history. Equity must be embedded from day one.

05

Neither left nor right has the answer

Both converge on institutional control as their solution. We are seeking a third path: federated localism — communities with real sovereignty, coordinating on shared infrastructure.

06

Honest inquiry over ideology

We don't have all the answers. We have a commitment to asking the right questions, testing ideas in real communities, and sharing what we learn openly — including the failures.

Who else is asking these questions?

We're not alone. Here's what we see in the landscape — and where we differ.

Post-Work Theorists

Srnicek & Williams, Aaron Bastani, Paul Mason — intellectually rigorous frameworks for why post-work is necessary. Strong on critique; lighter on practical community architecture.

Academic / theoretical

Time-Banking Networks

hOurworld, Timebanks USA, Spice UK — proven at small scale. Contribution exchange without money. The scaling challenge is real and largely unsolved.

Practical / local

Platform Co-operativism

Trebor Scholz's movement to build worker-owned digital platforms. Important corrective to extractive tech. Still operates largely within market logic.

Structural reform

UBI Advocacy

GiveDirectly, Basic Income Earth Network — important and worth supporting. But UBI is a floor, not a vision. It preserves the financial transaction at the centre of society.

Policy / financial

Mondragon / Worker Co-ops

70 years of federated worker ownership in the Basque country. One of the most compelling proofs-of-concept for democratic economic governance at scale.

Proven precedent

DAOs & Crypto Commons

Decentralised autonomous organisations offer fascinating governance structures. The jury is still out on whether they serve liberation or speculation. Worth watching carefully.

Emerging / experimental

How does bootr.ai sustain itself?

Funding an organisation dedicated to moving beyond financial transactions is — honestly — a genuine tension. We hold it openly rather than pretend it doesn't exist.

Our model is built on a simple principle: we charge those who can afford it, in order to serve those who can't. Communities and individuals join free. The costs are carried by organisations and businesses who engage us as thinking partners.

Long-term, we are building toward a membership model governed by the community itself — where those who benefit most contribute most, and decisions are made collectively.

Community memberships

Free. Individuals and community groups join the investigation, access resources, and contribute to shared learning.

Organisation partnerships

Businesses and institutions who want to actively navigate the transition engage bootr.ai as a strategic partner. Sliding scale.

Grants & fellowships

We are actively seeking mission-aligned foundations and public bodies. Post-work transition is an emerging funding priority.

Pilot programmes

Real-world experiments in contribution economies. Communities host them; learning is published openly; costs shared.
